With some convenient options, the Singer Athena 2009 sewing machine takes the work out of sewing your project. It will automatically thread your needle for you and comes with its own button hole under place. This under plate will safely hold down fabrics even when you use multiple layers or thicknesses of cloth.  Intended for a broad range of sewers, the Singer Athena 2009 is suitable for every skill level of sewer.

To me, there are much better machines out there for a comparable price that you may wish to consider such as the Singer 9960 Quantum Stylus and the Janome HD3000. The Singer 9960 costs about $30 less, is better quality and does more. The Janome HD3000 is the same price as the Singer Athena, has a much better reputation for quality and is good for every skill level. While the Athena 2009 isn't a horrible machine, the quality level is suspect and I feel there are better, more reliable machines out there in the same price range.

  • Can be used as a serger
  • Impressive number of stitching styles
  • Internal parts may be cheaply made
  • Thread can jam on occasion

Here are some of the good, bad and ugly features of this model:

Outfitted with a free arm for accessories, the Singer Athena 2009 boasts of a 10 watt LED work light. This light makes it easier for you to see your fabric and cuts down on any eye strain. Users can enjoy having plenty of flexibility and many bobbin options. When it comes to transporting the sewing machine, users have an easy job. With its built-in handle, the Singer 2009 Athena is extremely easy to move and stows away easily if it is not being used.

Like many thousand dollar machines on the market, the Singer Athena comes with feather stitching, satin stitching and button hole stitching. It offers many of the same qualities as a serger without the additional cost of a new machine.

No sewing machine can be made perfectly and this Singer model is no exception to the rule. Some users report that the machine is made with cheap products that break easily and that the thread jams are frustrating.

While the Singer Athena 2009 isn't a bad machine I consider it to be just an 'okay' one and don't recommend it. To me, you would be better off spending your money on a comparably priced sewing machine such as the cheaper and more popular Singer 9960 Quantum Stylus or the similarly priced Janome HD3000.
